TEAM GB Racing’s British Lions finished runners-up in the New Zealand Teams Championships at the Holden MacKenzie Speedway in Palmerston North on February 4-5 and our local newspapers were quick to celebrate a phenomenal effort by the team.
KEIGHLEY NEWS and BRADFORD TELEGRAPH & ARGUS followed local hero Frankie Wainman Jnr throughout his three-week visit to New Zealand, which culminated in a captain’s performance in the Teams Championship Final. Wainman Jnr was given the Warrior of the Weekend award for his efforts.
Wainman Jnr was also featured in the KEIGHLEY NEWS prior to taking part in the Live Action Arena at Autosport International.
Ben Hurdman was another outstanding performer for the team and both REDDITCH
STANDARD and WORCESTERSHIRE NEWS featured his part in the British Lions success.
BOLTON NEWS reported on Lee Fairhurst exploits on the other side of the world, while MOTORSPORT NEWS has also been following the story of the team throughout the past
month, including Fairhurst and his month stay down under.

At the turn of the year, the motorsport weekly published a full-page Rob Speak feature and his plans for Skegness this year, as well as a report on Tom Harris and his outstanding performance in the Chilli Bowl Midget Championships in Tulsa in January.

The final F1 meeting at Wimbledon also got coverage via Colin Casserley in MOTORSPORT NEWS, as did the opening meetings of the season proper at Belle Vue and King’s Lynn, prior to which the EASTERN DAILY PRESS and LYNN NEWS featured a previews based around local driver Mat Newson and Mick Sworder.
The BRADFORD TELEGRAPH & ARGUS previewed the parade of F1 stock cars at Odsal Stadium last month.
